“I’m from a small town, but I got large dreams/
That’s a powerful quote, taken directly from one of the rhymes of South Carolina’s hottest rap group: The H.B.O.Y.S. Now South Cack isn’t known for making a lot of noise on the Hip-Hop music scene, but this group, comprised of twin brothers MarvLust and J-Soul, are determined to change that. The H.B.O.Y.S. have been putting it down since their early teens as rap novices, and now as seasoned veterans, and are poised to take over the music scene.
The H.B.O.Y.S. can currently be heard on their promotional album, The Preview. This album features 12 of the tracks the H.B.O.Y.S. have been hitting the streets with during the past two years. It shows their versatility, experience, love of Hip Hop and knowledge of the game. The H.B.O.Y.S. are often compared to other artists or groups, but only in the sense of how they’ve mastered their craft. They have a unique blend of Dirty South and East Coast flavor. The Preview will get you crunk, make you dance, make you think, teach you how to holla at the opposite sex, and, if for nothing else, make you glad to hear real Hip Hop.
The H.B.O.Y.S. are breaking much new ground. Through their countless shows they are showing a different and much-needed side to Hip Hop. And often times they are the only Hip Hop act on the lineup, which means they have more weight to carry. People have been strongly following since their days of ripping shows on the campus of the University of South Carolina as well as around the city of Columbia (The Metro). They’ve also performed and had their music played in various parts of South Carolina including the popular annual 3 Rivers Music Festival, throughout North Carolina, and are developing a strong following in Georgia through their slew of performances in Augusta and Atlanta. They have also opened up for some of hip-hop’s biggest names such as Twista, Cee-Lo, Ying Yang Twins, Lil Scrappy, Pastor Troy, KRS-One, and 112.
Another testament to the strides the H.B.O.Y.S. are making is perhaps their biggest achievement to date. They took home first place in the first-ever “Wrigley’s wRapper Challenge,” a nationwide rap contest sponsored by the Wrigley Corporation. The H.B.O.Y.S.’ very popular song, Residential Love, was entered into the contest by a local radio station. Residential Love won the most consecutive weeks on the station’s local contest, “Dirty Homegrown,” and went on to capture the national crown, beating out hundreds of radio stations’ entries from across the country.
MarvLust and J-Soul have a keen sense of what it’s going to take to be successful in the music industry. Through their entertainment company, YoungLife Entertainment,
